The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif has confirmed that the state will pay out a financial reward to any Ghanaian athlete that wins a medal at the ongoing Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
The Minister told Graphic Online’s Kweku Zurek that per the reward scheme, gold medal winners will receive $5,000, silver medal winners will receive $4,000 and bronze medal winners will receive $3,000.
The Minister had earlier in July stated that a reward will be announced when the athletes return with medals from Japan.
Currently, only one Ghanaian athlete from a 14-member contingent has won a medal.
Featherweight boxer Samuel Takyi settled for bronze after losing to American Ragan Duke in the semi-final of their bout staged earlier today at the Ryōgoku Kokugikan Hall in Tokyo.
Meanwhile, Ghana’s last hopes for a medal will be in the men’s 4×100 relay at 2:30 am on Thursday, August 5, 2021.
